Paul Gravett

Nicknamed ‘The Man at the Crossroads’, Paul Gravett is a London-based writer, critic, curator, publisher and broadcaster specialising in British and international comics.

Among several definitive books, he has written Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics (Laurence King, 2004) and Graphic Novels: Stories To Change Your Life (Aurum Books, 2005), and co-written with Peter Stanbury Great British Comics ( Aurum Books,2006) and The Leather Nun and Other Incredibly Strange Comics ( Aurum Books, 2008). He edited The Mammoth Book of Best Crime Comics (Constable Robinson, 2008) and was general editor of 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die (Hamlyn, 2011).

He has curated numerous exhibitions on comics including Tove Jansson’s Moomins, The Atom Style, Jack Kirby, Hypercomics and Posy Simmonds.

Paul’s two most recent titles, Comics Art (Tate Publishing, 2013) and Comics Unmasked (British Library, 2014) continue the celebration of this particular art form. He is currently at work on a title for Thames & Hudson which will examine the growth in manga in Asian markets beyond Japan.

He writes about comics and graphic novels for The Independent, The Times Literary Supplement, ArtReview and Comic Heroes, among other periodicals. He is also co-publisher of Escape Books and co-director of Comica, the London International Comics Festival.
