Mary Atkinson’s involvement with complementary therapies began in the 1980s while working as a healthcare journalist on national magazines. In the mid 1990s she trained to be a practitioner and has qualifications in Holistic Massage, Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage and Reflexology. She is now a highly respected tutor and has been awarded Fellowship of the Federation of Holistic Therapists and also their Leadership Award for her inspiring work in the field.
Her first book The Art of Indian Head Massage (Carlton Books) was published in 2000 and since then she has authored other books including Hand and Foot Massage (Carlton Books), A Practical Guide to Self-Massage (Cico Books) and Healing Touch for Children (Albert Bridge Books).
She is Co-Founder of the innovative Story Massage Programme that combines the benefits of positive touch with the fun and creativity of stories, poems and songs. Her latest book Once Upon a Touch… Story Massage for Children (Singing Dragon) is a practical introduction to the programme which is now used internationally in mainstream and special schools, hospices, hospitals and family homes. For those wishing to incorporate the Story Massage Programme in their work, Mary also runs face-to-face and online training.
Mary is very active on social media and has started running regular Live Story Massage Demonstrations on the Story Massage Programme facebook page.
